“And then the murders began”

Twitter post from Marc Laidlaw, saying "The first like of almost any story can be improved by making sure the second line is "And then the murders began"

I stumbled on this lovely little tweet, and have been having WAY too much fun with it. Feel free to jump into the comments if you want to play!

My Books

Cover of 'A Book Without Dragons"

It was 10:48 when I got the call. And then the murders began.

The last note of the song draped itself over the otherwise silent room. And then the murders began.

(Now I kinda want to write about an assassin whose weapon of choice is music…)

It was the third day of Kett being the most important person in the world. And then the murders began.

(sigh… Kett… an evil overlord you are NOT, buddy. Just put the stone down, kay?)

“You stabbed someone in a bar fight,” Ellsie decided with calm assertation as she addressed the man in the prison cell across from hers. And then the murders began.

Other Books

The circus arrives without warning. And then the murders begin.

The small brown mouse named Ralph who was hiding under the grandfather clock did not have much longer to wait before he could ride his motorcycle. And then the murders would begin.

(In which Ralph joins a murderous biker gang)

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Life, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way-in short, the period was so far the like present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. And then the murders began.

(I couldn’t resist, lol)

T’was the night before Christmas, when all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. And then the murders began.

(Why do I feel like Ralph and his mouse biker gang is involved in this? Also, incidentally, I think this book actually exists. Santa’s Evil Twin, by Dean Koontz.)

Thanks for playing with me! Keep in going in the comments!

  • I would be interested in seeing what you could come up with if you wrote about an assassin whose weapon of choice was music. That sounds like the perfect character for a magic-heavy fantasy book.
