With the exception of a few “Twitter-fictions”, Tasty Tiny Magic is my only published story written in second person.

I know it’s not for everyone, but I find fiction in second person strangely exhilarating. For me, it invokes a sense of “why” because it’s such an unorthodox choice, but generally after finishing the piece I couldn’t imagine it being written any other way. It sets up an expectation that first or third person would be somehow unacceptable, and I expect to be convinced of that by the end.

Tasty Tiny Magic was born after I completed another journey through Italo Calvino’s “If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler,” which is one of the few books that warranted unintentional cries of delight as I finished it. (I don’t normally chatter while reading) Calvino left me so fascinated by the literary “you” that I needed to play with it.

My real problem with second person is how difficult it is to find, so if there are any other fans of this least-used point of view out there, I would happily accept any recommendations for new reading material 🙂

On an unrelated note, normally I try to push my clutter aside when I take my “three candle” picture for the end of the post. But this time, I am choosing to display my chaos to the world. Why? That’s just the kind of week it’s been, my friends.
