Often Clueless, Always Shoeless

Karaoke Pt 2 – Song Friends

December Spotlight Series – Christmas Karaoke Party – Part 2

Willow and Jasper (from A Book Without Dragons) show up to see the cast list for the songs. But in MetaSpace, things are always needlessly complicated. (but also very cute.)

Song Friends

Role Call: Willow and Jasper
Scenelette Type: Meta

Once, when Willow was in high school, his girlfriend had tried out for the spring musical (What was it? Bye Bye Birdie?). Willow didn’t remember the auditions very well, but he did remember the day the cast list was posted.

The hallways, a challenging battleground for someone as scrawny as Willow had been at the time, had become downright treacherous as the hopeful young thespians crowded around the printed sheet of paper to see if they were among the chosen few.

He assumed that when they announced the song lists for the karaoke party that it would be a similar situation (but without the added stress of almost missing one’s bus due to the elevated congestion in front of one’s locker.)

But of course, since this was the MetaSpace, things had to be complicated and strange. When he arrived in the wide open area with the other characters, there were no lists posted. Instead, they were each handed an ornate little bag, inside which were between two and four ornaments.

“Is this a riddle?” Willow asked Jasper, who was eagerly pulling his own collection of ornaments out and examining them. “They didn’t tell us there would be riddles.”

“Calm down,” Jasper said, holding up a gold star. “See, these are the songs.”

Willow looked at the two ornaments and saw that they did indeed each have a song name written on them. He had a large bell with “Carol of the Bells” etched into the gold metal and a spring of plastic holly at the top. The other ornament was a Santa Claus, who was holding a long scroll that read “Christmas Can Can.”

Willow found himself profoundly relieved when he saw that Jasper had one of the Santas as well.

“Does that mean we’re in a song together?” Willow asked.

“Actually, it looks like everyone’s in that one.”

Willow looked around and saw that most of the people in the room had that particular ornament. Still, the thought was comforting. Willow knew some of these people from other books thanks to previous parties like this, but was still nervous about the ‘meet new people’ caveat for this game.

Still, it was singing Christmas songs. That was inherently a good time. And most of the books here were fantasy, which he loved. He always enjoyed talking to the fantasy-based characters about their worlds. So, he’d be fine. Once he found the group and the initial awkwardness wore off, he’d be fine.

It just would have been a little easier if there had been lists posted…

As much as he liked to cling to Jasper as a social security blanket, his friend was happily attaching the four ornaments to the front of his sweater and then he announced that he was going to go find his ‘song friends.’ Jasper wasn’t always this goofy, but the guy really liked the holidays.

Willow didn’t attach his ornaments to his clothing, but he held one in each hand and plunged into the crowd, searching for his team for ‘Carol of the Bells.’

Author’s Notes – Oh, Willow… stop complaining, sweetheart <3 You all look so cute with your little ornaments!
