Karaoke Pt 6 – Step Into Costumes

December Spotlight Series – Christmas Karaoke Party – Part 6

Time to check back in with the ‘Step Into Christmas’ gang! (I wrote about them a lot for some reason…) Previous post is here if you missed it.

It wasn’t a normal meeting room. For one thing, it was bigger, which Denise took as a good sign that they were supposed to be choreographing some kind of dance routine to go along with their song.

She hoped so.

She had taken the liberty of finding lyrics and sheet music of their song for everyone, but beyond that, she didn’t know what she could do. The song was definitely peppier than what she thought she’d be doing. It wasn’t really her style.

Then again, it didn’t seem much like Zabby’s style either. Or Derryl’s. Nallain seemed like the only member of their group to have the requisite level of enthusiasm. She was sort of hoping Nallain would take the lead on this.

The blond woman showed up to the meeting with a tray of cookies that were irregular enough that they had to be handmade. That was certainly a good start. “Hey, everybody!” she said. “How are we doing?”

“Good,” Zabby said.

Denise noticed the girl’s posture was perpetually curled in on itself. She knew it was most likely due to social insecurities, and as such she should leave it alone, but still she wished she could train those shoulders back where they belonged. Didn’t she know she could have back issues later?
Derryl gave a thumb’s up instead of texting his response.

“So, I know we all know the song,” Nallain began, plugging her iPod into a speaker, “But I thought we could start by listening to it together? See if we get any ideas for how we want to perform it?”

“Sounds good,” Denise said.

“But it’s not like we need a reason, right?” Nallain said, queuing the music up. “I mean, the song is amazing.”

Soon the music of Elton John was filling the room and Denise relaxed a little. Once the song ended, they were all smiling (because how can you not?)

Well, Derryl was only sort of smiling. Denise didn’t know much about him, but he seemed a bit somber. But then again, Denise knew she sometimes gave off similar vibes at first glance.

“Okay,” Nallain said, clapping her hands and pulling out a tablet. “So, for costumes, I was thinking something like this. You know, not too off-the-wall crazy, but still fun and festive.” She flipped through a series of pictures of people having snowball fights in green dresses, candy-striped leggings, and shirts with overlarge buttons.

Denise thought it was still a little ‘wild child’ for her taste, but there were no Rudolf noses or pointed shoes with jingle bells involved, so she decided not to argue. Zabby actually seemed happy about it.

Derryl’s text response was, No freaking way.

After some discussion and a bit of internet searching, Nallain was able to find an outfit that would fit in with their established look and not make Derryl feel silly. It was a dark green suit, black shirt, gold tie, with some festive holly designs on the cuffs and lapels.

The rest of them picked their outfits, and then Nallain turned to Denise and said, “So, I’m assuming you’ve got us covered for the choreography? You’re a dancer, right?”

“Well, I’m from the dancing story,” Denise said, wanting to make sure that was clear. “But really Ellsie and Lester are the dancers.

“But you dance, too,” Nallain said, nodding her head as if hinting for the answer she’d like to receive.

“It’s complicated,” she said, not knowing how to explain further without unraveling the intricacies of her story and the world it existed in. “Besides, dancing and choreography are different talents. One doesn’t necessarily imply the other.”

Zabby cleared her throat (possibly the politest little request for attention Denise had ever heard,) so they turned to look at her. She shrunk a little under the attention, but still said, “I have an idea.”
